I am a Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Counselor who offers nutrition and wellness counseling and coaching to individuals, leads workshops on nutrition and creates corporate wellness programs that offer an integrated, whole-person approach to health and nutrition.

I have a long history of studying nutrition, health and psychology and received my formal nutrition training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in conjunction with Columbia University in New York City. I’m constantly learning, and along the way have studied with such nutrition greats as Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra, Mark Hyman, Walter Willett (head of Nutrition at Harvard Medical School), Joshua Rosenthal, and Alisa Viti – among others.

I work with clients both in person in Keene, New Hampshire or by telephone, nationally, to help them achieve optimum health and savor their lives.

I live in southwestern New Hampshire with my husband Jim, cat and dog – and have three grown step-children. I graduated from Bennington College in 1976 and moved to Keene to study counseling psychology at what is now Antioch University New England, after which I had a 15 year detour through the business world as publisher of two successful publications.

My journey to practice holistic health and nutrition counseling has been a long one. I spent many of my early years with absolutely no awareness of my diet at all. As a young adult I worked 12 hour days, was addicted to sugar among other unhealthy foods. I felt anxious, exhausted and unfocused much of the time – and also struggled to keep my weight under control. Surprisingly, it didn’t occur to me that I could or should change anything. Instead, I propped myself up with numerous cups of coffee each day.

I gradually began to draw the connection between what I ate and how I felt, but still wasn’t sure what to do to fix things. It took a family health crisis for me to begin to focus on diet in earnest, and at that point I realized how important the right foods and supplements are for not only our sense of well-being, but for health itself. 

My own relationship with food is now a really good one. I love to eat, and  I love to explore the world through food. I find that when I eat the foods that are right for me, I can savor exquisite tastes and feel both nourished and sated – instead of feeling constantly hungry. I understand what my body needs now, so my brain is clear and I also don’t gain weight. I love being able to teach my clients to do these same things.

I enjoy cooking (but have to say that when Jim and I first met 20 years ago, the only meal I knew how to prepare was breakfast. As a busy executive back then, I never had the time to learn how to cook at all). Today I specialize in healthy, great tasting dishes that take a half hour or less to prepare, and I’m constantly amazed at how delicious and nourishing simple food can be.

"I yearned for the day when I could avoid feeling guilty about everything I ate."

I decided to work with Sharon because for the past 15 years I have slowly gained weight and have struggled in my attempts to lose it. I also yearned for the day when I could avoid feeling at least semi-guilty about everything I put into my mouth. In the past when I have been more in control of what I eat (even though I have never eaten wildly out of control) I feel better and food means more to me, and I wanted to get back to that feeling. I wanted to eat to maintain good health.

Even though in the past I thought I knew what was healthy, and had been through times as a vegetarian, I learned while working with Sharon that I had only a rudimentary understanding of what was “healthy” for me and what was not.

Now, I am making choices that I can live with regarding food. I find that my cravings for certain foods have diminished significantly and I am eating new, healthier foods, and am really enjoying how they taste and how they make me feel.

In addition, it took a couple of months for me to start losing weight, but then I began to steadily lose 1-2 pounds per week. I continued losing weight even after I finished working with Sharon and have now lost almost 20 pounds. This is very exciting to me because that was one of my goals, but it’s even more exciting because I haven’t even been trying. And I’ve certainly not been dieting. I’ve just been eating foods that I love that make me feel great.

I would recommend working with Sharon for anyone who is like me and generally interested in nutrition, but not the traditional model where eating is based on the USDA’s food pyramid. Sharon has a great way of instructing/informing me about my own specific health concerns and helping me use nutrition and general healthy choices to treat these concerns. Working with Sharon has proven to be the best thing I've ever done for myself.

At 53, I was feeling far older than my years as I found myself struggling to maintain my weight (never mind lose the 50 or so extra pounds that I’d accumulated since the births of my children!), spending more and more on meds to combat depression, anxiety and hypertension, and encountering sudden, unexplained and/or persistent aches and pains throughout my body. “We don’t know what we don’t know.”

I have always been very active and rode my bike 2000 miles a year without any weight loss. I knew that what I was eating wasn't very good for me, but I didn't know what the right foods were and I felt like I was missing out on a opportunity to live healthier. I knew if I didn't get a handle on this now and change our lifestyle that it would get increasing harder as we get older.

I knew my wife needed to be involved with this process, since we spend so much time with each other, and so we worked with Sharon together.

We have both done extremely well. Speaking for myself here, I feel great. I have tried many new foods, have more energy, and feel like I am in control of what I eat. I understand better what fuel my body needs and I can definitely feel the difference when I eat the right foods. I am satisfied when I leave the dinner table and can concentrate on living life rather than filling myself with junk. I can't wait to get back on the bike in the spring and see how I can perform with the right fuel in the tank.

"...it's not about deprivation or willpower, but focused on deeply nourishing ourselves."

I am currently a grad student studying business and sustainability and as I was getting further into my program I realized that while I was learning ways to improve the sustainability of society, that I, myself, did not feel ‘sustainable’; meaning that my lifestyle did not allow me to consistently feel healthy and I often struggled to rejuvenate myself after stressful periods. I felt hypocritical advocating for change in the world, when I didn't personally exemplify or live this change.

Although already somewhat health conscious, I needed more tools in order to improve health and have more energy in my day-to-day life and I came upon the idea that food is by far the best to accomplish this, after all ‘food is medicine’ and ‘we are what we eat’. This is when I decided to work with Sharon.

Before I found Sharon I had many chronic symptoms. Physically, I experienced chronic fatigue, body aches, allergy symptoms, food sensitivities, headaches, digestive problems, bloating, menstrual issues, and an overall sense of diminished well-being.

Emotionally, I was prone to ups-and-downs, anxiety and depression. Mentally, I often had trouble concentrating and lots of ‘brain fog’; my friends often joked about my bad memory. However, the worst chronic symptom I experienced was my addiction to sugar and caffeine, and binge eating under stress. These compulsions plagued my sense of well-being and followed me around like a black cloud even on the sunniest of days.

Now, after working with Sharon, I feel so much better! I no longer feel tired and bloated all the time, overwhelmed with ‘how to eat’, or unable to walk past a plate of brownies. Now I feel healthier, more fit, my skin is clearer and I have a much greater sense of vitality. Plus my tool belt is full of new and sharpened tools and nowadays, a trip to the grocery store, with its unbelievable array of options, isn’t overwhelming anymore!

Some friends of mine had worked with Sharon and had great success with weight loss. I was tired of yo-yo dieting, which I had done for 20 years, and was ready to attack my weight problem in a very different way, so I decided to work with her, too.
It took a little while, but I’ve now started losing weight and am down six pounds so far and am thrilled because I’m actually losing weight during the holiday season while also enjoying what I’m eating. This is usually not at all what happens during this time of year.

"You can build a sustainable program to live with for the rest of your life."

I decided to work with Sharon because I wanted to learn more about nutrition and how what I ate affected my weight, energy and overall fitness level. I wasn’t feeling my best and I felt that I needed to take control and really learn about what I was putting into my body to gain an understanding of what was affecting my wellness at its root core level. After working with Sharon for six months, I am now forever changed in how I approach and evaluate what I eat and how I feel.

There is so much information out there and so many diets bombarding you with often conflicting statements, that it is difficult to know what to listen to and what will work for you. In the past, thinking I was doing things the ‘right’ way, I would often eat the wrong things, at the wrong times and in the wrong proportions which created a flywheel affect of seeking more of the same things that weren’t giving me the energy and nutrients that I needed.

Sharon and I were able to tailor my diet in ways that worked for me.  My diet now is easy and natural (I am not “on a diet”) and I now rarely have cravings for things that are less healthy for me. Sharon introduced me to foods I was never aware of before that can satisfy my appetite and are much healthier and better sources of energy. This, combined with taking some tailored supplements have made a tremendous difference in getting me to a place where my weight is stabilized and I have lots of energy for my workouts, my job and my family. I literally have never felt better!

“Sharon is very encouraging and is an excellent cheerleader.”

I was a sugarholic for years, and ate everything sweet that came my way. I especially enjoyed frozen yogurt (as long as it contained chocolate), and things like Hershey kisses and those baby Snickers bars – by the bagful. How delicious it all was! But the side-effects were quite disturbing: much heartburn and insomnia, and worst of all, feeling anything but good about myself for “being so weak”.

I was also tired of feeling fatigued so much of the time for no discernible reason, and I needed someone to be accountable to. In short, I was a mess.

Now, after 2-1/2 months, I feel as if I’m learning, finally, how to best nourish my body It’s been fun trying new recipes and eating foods that I hadn’t had before that taste really good. Best of all, things are better between myself and me, and that in itself is huge.

"Working with Sharon was one of the best gifts I could have given myself."

I began working with Sharon after I had recently finished getting my degree in art, which I did while working. Between working, attending classes and doing homework my exercise and eating regimens were very much disrupted. I badly needed help to get myself on track. "We created a diet tailored to my physical realities that has really been working well for me."

I spent years experimenting with many dietary approaches (including extreme low fat, AMA heart diet, vegetarianism, vegan) to manage my heart disease. While I was able to get my cholesterol numbers down, my triglycerides were high and I felt "unbalanced". With little awareness on my part, my body was battling the toxic effects of my diet and my medications. This often left me feeling exhausted and depleted. It was difficult for me to get the exercise I needed because I just didn’t have the energy to do it.

After all this, I was fortunate to find and work with Sharon, and was able to greatly benefit from her holistic approach. We created a diet tailored to my physical realities that has really been working well for me.

After a little more than a year of using this approach (I finished working with Sharon roughly six months ago), I've had two blood tests that were the best I have ever had. They were balanced and every measurement was normal.

I now eat a wonderfully interesting diet that includes many of the things I had previously avoided and hadn’t eaten for years. I feel like I am definitely gaining the upper hand here.

"I ate ‘well’, so didn’t think I needed help."

I’m in my mid-60s and consulted with Sharon because various things were starting to go wrong with my body. Among them were that I had many, very severe leg cramps and also had frequent, intense hot flashes. My sister had been working with Sharon for a couple of years and has gotten great results.
